BINS

As you can see we have changed the recycling bins at Tahunanui School.

There are green and yellow bins. In these bins you can put in muffin wrappers, sandwich crusts, egg shells, fruit peelings and carrots.

At morning tea the bins are outside Rm 4,5,6 and 7. On the Junior side they only have one bin which is outside Rm 11 and 12. At lunch time the bins are beside the pool, outside the Library.

SO MAKE SURE YOU USE THE SCRAP BINS TO DISPOSE OF YOUR FOOD SCRAPS.

CENERGY
Tahunanui School  has been using way too much power this year, so  the Blue Crew has created a light bulb character called Cenergy.

Cenergy is there to help everyone to remember to turn off the lights. We have made small posters that have been put in all classes at our school.
So when no-one is around...flick the switch.

SMOKE-FREE SIGNS

The blue crew have decided to update our school's smoke-free signs to make them bigger and brighter.

The reason we decided to do this is because the older ones are too small and dull and you cannot see them very well. There are only seven in our school and people don’t seem to notice the signs as there are often lots of cigarette butts left lying in our school ground.

Our signs will be brighter which will make more people hopefully stop smoking in our school.

Paper4Trees

At Tahunanui School we recycle as much as we can.  We are lucky that The Body Shop NZ sponsors us for recycling paper and cardboard.  The more we recycle the more we get rewarded for trees to plant around our school.
Watch these video to see what we have been up to:

The Green Ninjas

                       The Green Ninjas

The Green Ninjas are a yr 5/6 Enviro group from Tahunanui School. We have achieved our bronze award.  This was started by us rewriting our guiding principles that run throughout the program.  The five guiding principles are:
  1.  Learning for Sustainability,
  2. Empowered students
  3. Maori perspectives,
  4. Respecting culture and diversity
  5.   Sustainable communities.
We have adopted a section of Jenkins stream to clean. At the moment we have visited Jenkins stream on Pascoe St and discovered that there are not many signs of life, and then we visited another part of the stream but further up this time and found much more life.We think that it may be because lower down near our school there are lots of houses nearby and that they leak unwanted things into the creek we also think that it may be because lots of oil trucks drive over the bridge that is above the stream.

Enviroschools Workshop

On Friday March the 8th Lindsey the Nelson Enviroschools co-ordinator came to room 4 to work with The Blue Crew and The Green Ninjas.

The first activity we did was learning more about the Enviroschools guiding principles then we had to match up pictures of students doing the guiding principles with the actual guiding principle.

Then we did a small group activity using a 'consensus mat' about what we would like our school to be like. We recorded our ideas down and then together decided which things were similar about everyone's ideas.

It was a really enjoyable experience. Thanks for your help Lindsey.

THE BLUE CREW

The Blue Crew are a new Enviroschools group at Tahunanui School that is made up of year three and four students.
This year some of our goals are to make ‘No Smoking’ and ‘No Littering’ signs and me and my best friend Keira are planning to make a friendship place. A friendship place is where kids can make friends when they have no one to play with.
The Blue Crew want to make our school a more happier place. Some members of the group are planning to paint the big wall
by room 7 so people who come into the school are greeted by a beautiful colourful wall.
Everyone in the Blue Crew are aiming to do something to improve the well-being of our school and make it a better place to learn.
